The great Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich has died at the age of 80.
What a sad day... :(
I always knew that human beings are mortal. I never realised though, that Rostropovich actually was a human being like the rest of us, earthlings.

I am also very sad. One of his oldest recordings I own, you cand find on DVD-EMI played live are the "Cello Suites of Bach". He was at his age almost perfect, as always, very close to the score.
I also admired his work of conductor of the symphonies of Shostakovitch, not a genious but very correct.
So God has another genious in his celestrial orquestra.
Chrees,
I agree with you that there are more on the way but one cannot forget DuPre, Fournier Casals and Rostropovitch as is they have never existed, they and they performances deserve to be remembered forever.
Cheers

Why, just because he was a genius Cello player ?
No, because he was such an inspiring and interesting person in the first place. He was an important man outside the musical world as well. Many people regarded him as a living legend, and I tend to agree.
I didn't call him a genius, by the way. His recordings though, mean a lot to me. Especially, the cello sonatas of Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Beethoven with the great Sviatoslav Richter. There is also a terrific live recording of the Beethoven sonatas with Richter, filmed at the 1964 Edinburgh Festival by the BBC. The performance should still be available on DVD from EMI. Highly recommended!

Just to give some example of his personal quality I should tell you that even when the Queen of Spain was going to be again grandmother this same day, she prefered to assisted in Moscou to the funeral of his good friend Rostropovitch.
I think that good people have good friends.

I'd say famous people have famous burial-goers. BTW, was YoYoMa there?
It truly is a sad day when superior people have to leave the earth. But that day quickly goes into oblivion, and when those people have made us better human beeings it is like the most important part of them outlives their bodies.

I felt so sad, when I learned about it that day...:( He was such unique musician. I might say - the diamond of our country.
I met him once after his concert - it was unforgatable moment, just to stay near him, talk to him.
He was very outstanding person - not only the extremely talented musician, but also the person with great sense of humor.
