I'm in a middle of a painful transition from N-track to Cubase SX as my sequencing soft.
There is a great tool called Time Warp in Cubase. So I guess this is a question for Cubase users (other software have similar functions I believe). Is there a way of using Time Warp but having the grid inside MIDI key or in place editors untouched. Because every time I use Time Warp I totally mess up my grid inside the above mentioned editors and MIDI moving/editing of individual notec becomes very difficult.

Actually I think I have found a solution. I just need to have Time Warp in "Musical evens follow" mode and now my grids are messed up. :D

Hi Randall,
There are actually several time warp options to choose from, not just one (I'm working with Nuendo 3, but I believe it's the same in Cubase). It's important to know that there is a difference between linear time warp and musical-events-based time warp. You just have to pick the right one for your project.
As for the grid, if it's messed up in other editors, the first thing you should do is to check if the grids shown in your window are really the same. To me, it sounds as if the grid in your project window is set to "Time Linear", while the other editors snap the MIDI-data to a grid that is set to "Bars and Beats", or vice versa.
If it's really your grid that is messed up, then you have probably warped your grid to the musical events, instead of the other way around, causing the tempo track to be modified relative to (linear) time. If you don't want this to happen, switch the grid in the project window from "time linear" to "bars and beats". The grid will now remain as steady as the original tempo track, in the sense that it sticks to it.
It's not entirely clear to me what you expect the warp-function to do. If you could be just a little more specific, then I may be able to give you a more accurate advise.
Meanwhile, good luck!
Jerome

Sorry, I missed this post. Did you solve your grid-problems now?

Thanks Jerome for your input on this!
Yeah I've solved it. I had a MIDI track in music mode ,and I wanted to use some time warping. In normal time warp my grids would mess up badly and I would lost all "orientation" on my MIDI track.. But after I used Time Warp (Musical events follow) I had everything work out just fine, the grid positioning remained just as I had it before warping. :)
