hello people,

I own a imac 24”, 1 Gb RAM. if I upgrade the operating system to this upcoming 64 bit leopard, can i increase the RAM to let's say 6 or 8 Gb without any other alteration to the machine apart of the operating system? Or the RAM is fixed due to motherboard specifications and limitations? The current limit is 3 Gb. And a last thing: why the 2 Gb stick is about £450? (at about 900$!!!!), even though it will be cheaper since the 64b systems can handle tons of RAM, 8 Gb of RAM is going to cost a lot. Anyways, if you have any ideas about my first question I will be glad to listen

thanks for your time

Hi Kostas,

It seems as though you would need to have the available RAM slots in order to put more RAM in, you might want to double check with Apple as to whether your 3GB limit on that Mac will be any different with the new OS-

thanks for the reply, I am new to "apple world!" and not much knowledge here, actually this machine was kind of present, I prefer my pc laptop still. I haven't install any EW products yet waiting for full intelmac support (EW, cubase etc etc), is anyone out there find the apple ads irritating by the way? :) I am pc and I am stupid, I am mac and soooo cool

you are limited to how much ram your mac was designed to hold (add as much as you can)1 gig is barely enough for most DAW applications

Kostas,

Two things. Yes, you're limited by the physical motherboard. It may only be designed to hold a specific amount of RAM as well as speed, etc. No different than a PC. Second, I must agree with you, the Apple ads are quite annoying. I use both Windows and Mac's, I find that they have unique features that I miss when I am on the other. It's unfortunate that Apple tries to paint a picture of monotony and an undesirable "nerdiness" to sell a product.

Be sure to check with an Apple store associate though to be sure you can upgrade your hardware the way you like. Oh, and I use a AMD 1.5ghz, 1.25G RAM, 120ghd (system) with 200ghd (samples). It works fine.
