Hi All
Anyone here a fan of the poly-stylistic works of Alfred Schnittke, in particular the symphonies and the concerto grossos (I refuse to say Concerti Grossi, as I am not Italian!)?
I've been hugely influenced by his music and philosophy.
I wonder if anyone has put together (using EWQL Orchestra) any works which sound similar to Schnittke. Would be interested in hearing those!
I attended a 'Schnittke Weekend' at the Barbican in London in 2001. It was an amazing experience!

I am a huge fan!
I also love his "larger" works for orchestra... piannissimo, concert for piano and strings (I think a concerto grosso as well), some choir works, Gogol suite and other...
no never tried anything like that with EW...

... and what about the 'Faust Cantata' and the emotionally exhausting Cello Concerto No 1? I believe he also wrote a fair bit of film music too.

Steve,
I don't have everything he wrote... hehe. but after your thread I'm sure to be on the look out for the cello concerto and everything else that comes mentioned here, that I don't know (which should be quite a lot).
Oh! I also like his quartets.

I heard of him a while back and was pretty interested in what his poly-stylistic stuff sounded like.
Never got around to getting a cd though, any you would recommend?

The Concerto Grossos, Numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4/Symphony No 5 (a single work). Are all excellent and twisted/distorted in a humorous and dark way. Lots of irony in there.
The 1st and 3rd symphonies also, use a lot of quotes from other works.
There's tonnes to choose from.

I got to play his Piano Quartet a few years back, which quotes an unfinished quartet written by Mahler when he was a student. Very interesting!

The music from the piano quartet forms the material for the astonishing 2nd movement of the Concerto Grosso No 4/Symphony No 5 - amazing stuff and overwhelming in its emotional power!

I hadn't known that! I'll have to try to find it. Thanks for the info.
