Hi fellow composers :)

I have a small problem with FL Studio and Kompakt. When I use Kompact as a plugin I can't use the mod wheel on my midi keyboard (usb) to control the expression of any instrument. I'm not that familiar with FL Studio so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

The mod-wheel is not automatically transmitted to the VSTi (Kompakt) in FLStudio. You need to link the mod-wheel to the controller in the VSTi You want it to control...

MIDI-implementation in FL is a bit strange and not always that easy to get to grips with (and even when You have come to terms with it, You still mumbles curses every now and then)

I don't know Your set-up in FLStudio, but this is how I do it:

1) Add the VSTi as a channel

2) In the upper right corner of the VSTi GUI, You can set a MIDI port (initially thre dashes are shown there). Set this to a free MIDI-port (I always set my Gold to port 5)

3) Add a MIDI-Out channel and load the basic preset to get the basic controllers. Set the port to the same as in previous step.

If everything is set up correct, You can now use the MIDI-Out channel to control the corresponding channel in Kompakt...

To use the Mod-wheel, right click on the Mod-knob in the MIDI-Out and select "Link to controller". In the following dialog, just move the mod-wheel on the keyboard to get it linked.

Now You can use the mod-wheel to control the mod in the VSTi.

I have made my own MIDI-out preset for Gold which also includes Expression and Sustain, and with the port set to 5 as default.

There are other ways to access the controllers of the VSTi, but this way feels more natural to me, and I also think it is easier to work with the parameters like this in the longer run.

Rico

Modwheel does not control expression, straight from the get go. Modwheel is CC#1 and controls various cross fades in some patches and expression is CC#11 (most higher end midi controller keyboards will have a pedal input whereabouts you hook up a pedal to control expression).
I do not use FL studio, but for my setup, if I wanted to control CC#11 through my default CC#1(modwheel), I would do this through my midi controller.

Hmm, I assumed that EverybodyelsE wanted to control CC#1 with the mod-wheel, but it doesn't really matter.

In FL-studio, regardless of which CC# You'd like to control, one way of doing it is to use the MIDI-out generator (as I described in my previous post) and set up one of the (unassigned) knobs to controll the desired CC:

1) right click on one of the knobs in the MIDI out window, choose "configure" and set it up as You please

2) Right click on the same knob again, this time choose "Link to controller...". Then just move the mod wheel (or any other knob, slider or whatever on Your MIDI controller), and it is linked to that knob and will control whatever the knob is set up to control.
