View Full Version : Patch changes in EWQL Silver

Howdy,
I've been using EWQL Silver for a while, and I use it with Sonar. Basically I just load what samples I need in the Kompakt player, and then leave it alone, controlling everything (channel assignments, automation, etc) in Sonar.
Here's my question. I don't want to take up so many channels with a bunch of, say, different string articulations (arco, pizz, then trill W, then trill H, etc... right there that's 4 occupied channels just for a violin, not to mention 4 MIDI tracks in Sonar). This method is extremely inefficient, and I just know there has to be a better way of doing this. Is it possible to tellthe Kompakt player to change patches at different times? I guess I can't really articulate it better than that. Or say I want my legato bassoon to suddenly play staccato for a few measures... I don't like having to create a whole new MIDI track, load in another sample in another channel forever just for those scant few seconds. Does that make sense?
I plan to purchase the Gold Edition soon, but only once I figure out how to more efficiently use Silver. Is there anything I'm overlooking that can help me out? I'd appreciate any assistance.
Thanks a lot.

well I would suggest using a patch with KeySwitch capability. What this means is pretty much you'll have different means of playing an instrument in one patch, as it loads all of the samples from multiple patches and lets you alternate between them by playing a note very low on the octave scale *usually C1, or C2*
I don't rightly know if Silver however has Keyswitch functionality.

Wow, that sounds like a fantastic feature, and exactly what I need! How can I tell if Silver has this?
Edit:
And I assume Gold does have this... is there information here somewhere regarding how to set it up?

well when you sift through the patches some of them will have a KS at the beginning of their name. This implies KeySwitch.
If you do that, you will find some keys at the low end in a light yellow tint. These are the key switchers, clicking on them at any point will alternate to another style.

I see.
Well then I guess Silver is bereft of this feature. Assuming then I do get Gold at some point, how would I determine what patches I change to? Are they all pre-configured? Will I have any control over what these alternate patches are or no?

Silver has lots of keyswitch patches. They all have the letters "KS" at the END of their names, not the beginning. To get the best from them, you really need to read the manual section dealing with them.
Kind regards.

ah, my apologies. I was not remembering their placement right.
As for your other question all the different styles are preconfigured, so when you make it play a keyswitch note, you will always revert to the style that note corresponds to. As to finding out which keyswitch does what, I don't think there is a definite way other then clicking it to find out!

Are you referring to the PRO/XP version of Silver or something (if those exist... I'm not very familiar with all of EW's products)? I just have the base version of Silver. Because I'm looking through all these patches and none of them have a KS anywhere in their names, nor are any keys tinted gold at the bottom of the keyboard
I mean, I'm just starting to learn how to use the Kontakt player (Kompakt?), so this would be where I'm looking to find these Keyswitch patches, right?

that is correct. I don't think base silver has Keyswitches.
Is there an expansion for silver? I'll have to see if I can find it.

I found a .pdf from soundsonline that lists in a huge chart all the Orchestra Editions, and it says that the plain Silver has a couple Keyswitches. Oddly, Gold has some too, but very rarely the same Keyswitches that come with Silver. I've never heard of Keyswitches before I started this thread... does the manual explain this concept in detail (I don't remember ever opening a manual for my Silver edition)?

gold has a huge amount of keyswitches. Pretty much every instrument directory will have a keyswitches.
I would recommend getting gold in any case, the quality difference is phenomenal.

Just for information, both Silver and Silver XP have keyswitch patches. If you can't find
them in your edition of Silver, try downloading the latest Silver update. They definately exist!

Looks like that's what I needed to do! I got this new patch and now I see a bunch of Keyswitches in my Kompakt player. Looks like I also need to update the player, but that's not a hassle. Thanks a lot.

This is not correct. I have Silver unexpanded. It has lots and lots of keyswitches. Where did you find the information that it does not?
Silver does have an optional expansion called Pro XP Silver.
Kind regards.

Like Cellius I must have not have had the update, as my Silver doesn't have any. I also asked one of my friends who is more heavily into East West then I am. He is not usually wrong about these things. I guess i'll have something to point and make fun of him for a while then.

Oh...right. I thought you might have found wrong info on the internet or something. Incidentally, any time I ever install new software from a CD-ROM or DVD the first thing I always do is check the developers' website for updates. The box it came in could have been just gathering dust in a shop for quite some time.
Kind regards.

The manual I wrote has a lot of detail on keyswitches for every edition (Silver, Gold, Platinum). If the manual that came in the box is shorter than 213 pages, you have the old manual and you should ask for the PDF described below. If the last page of the index is 213, then the printed manual you have describes everything you need, including what note in each keyswitch gives you what articulation.
If you do not have my newer printed manual, then you can ask for the EWQLSO Guide by writing a Private Message (PM) to Stephan Podell on this forum. It's all the detail about the original versions, but not the Pro XP vesions. It can be downloaded at no cost. You have to include your serial number in the PM because it's only available to those with a valid copy.
Hope this helps,
John

Thank you for that information. I actually just ordered the Gold Bundle (at a very discounted price, but ouch that still hits a grad student's wallet hard! :( ) so I will see what sort of manual is included in that.
Seriously I hope it's a wise investment. Is the quality difference between Gold and Silver really that substantial??

I just recently got the Silver bundle so am new to EW in general. I find the KS patches but none of the keys on the keyboard diagram in the player highlight to show which ones do the switches. Looked in the manual both print and pdf and didn't find a default key. Is there a default switch key?

Depending on the instrument, you may have to shift the onscreen keyboard to see the keyswitch notes on your monitor. To the left of the keyboard are small buttons with left and right arrows. Start by clicking the left arrow a time or two and you should see some yellow keys appear. Or if you select a low instrument, like a double bass, you may need to use the right arrow.
You'll be happy to know that once you get to the PLAY interface, it includes a complete 88-key keyboard in the window. No shifting up or down is necessary.
HTH,
John
