I've been dabbling in some percussion mockups lately, and i've tried and tried again to create some nice meaty punishing percussion beats. I've been told that compression is essential to create that meatiness sound, and a large variety of percussion going off at once is also essential, but I was wondering how you all did it.

I'd like to know too. I am eager to get some huge "Zimmer drums" but haven't been able to get anything like it. I thoght SD would be that out of the box, but it wasn't that simple.

Yeah, Zimmer won't pop out of the box... Kinda machina without deus.

It's compression more than anything, but it's also in some cases reverb as well.
I can't speak for stormdrum, but if you take a dry set of rock drums and add a room sound to it, it can make the difference. In fact, when recording some studio engineers put mics in the corner of the room and route it to a seperate track to get as little or a lot of room sound to the drums in the mix. A good example is EZDrummer, it allows you to add more room sound if you want.
In some cases it can be EQ, but that depends on the song and the sample.

If you guys are running Kontakt 2 at all, open up the taiko's of big hits in SD, add bass guitar compression to it. And Reverb of course.... Tell me what you think (i find it really huge)

Piotr, you must accept the fact that the best percussionists are the compressionists.
Yes, compression does it all - especially kills all the nasty dynamics.

compression it is then! I'm going to do some super compression tactics tonight!
TRUESTRIKE 2!! look no further.
Or a combination C + F mics on Taikos/Wagner Bdrum/Concert toms and Kontakt 2 library 'orchestral thunder' layer these together for great results.

To much Sub :), Im not sure what the author wanted but big hits with to much low does not work well doing fast parts. It will loose alot of the attack and edge and you will have a big carpet of sub freqz that just makes it sound soft and muddy. The trick is to choose the subrich stuff at the right time like on the down beat or at the end of a section. Also big hits blends well with bass and cello so the best thing is to leave room for all the elements in the freq spectrum. Or else it easy to get mud and thats only good for pottery.
Well thats just my opinion :)
