Doug Rogers
06-25-2005, 08:15 AM
In addition to our monthly contest in the demos section, we are starting an additional contest for SYMPHONIC CHOIRS demos only here, ending July 31, 2005.
EASTWEST/SOUNDSONLINE will reward the winner with an EASTWEST or QUANTUM LEAP product of their choice up to $1000 (MSRP)!!
Please read the rules, and place any qualifying entries here which will be time stamped. Eligible forum members can vote during the week following the cut-off date to select a winner.
Rules -
* Entries should be placed in the WORDBUILDER CENTRAL section of this forum.
* List only the demo name (followed by the link to the demo, which must be active during the contest), followed by the composer and the products you used - no other comments.
* You may enter as many compositions as you wish in the same contest.
* In order to vote, you must have been a forum member for two months OR you entered a demo in the current contest.
* You cannot vote for yourself.
* One vote per forum member.
* Only put the name of the demo and composer in the voting thread - no comments.
* Forum members will judge the contest at the end of July to decide the winner.
* We reserve the right to disqualify any entry if there is evidence of voting irregularities.
* The contest will close at the end of July and the winner will be announced after 7 more days of voting.
* Please make sure the demo includes only sounds from libraries distributed by EASTWEST, with an emphasis on EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP virtual instruments.
* Compositions that are subject to third party copyright, or compositions that include sounds from non EASTWEST distributed products are not eligible.
* Real vocals may be added to the choirs, provided vocalists are credited, and the vocals are not included in any sample library or virtual instrument, and EASTWEST/SOUNDSONLINE has permission from the vocalists to use the demo for promotional purposes.
* All that enter the contest consent to EASTWEST/SOUNDSONLINE using their demo for promotional purposes.
Good luck!

What a trip!! Maybe add a touch of reverb. I thought the timing was a little off here and there. Consonants cause a delay in the vowel, so you have to tweak timings a bit in your sequencer editor.

Not sure if we’re suppose to post comments about demo entries here or start another thread … but …
That’s freaky!!
I assume that is for the game character in ‘Neverwinter Nights’ ?
It gets a little repetitive after awhile, but personally I like the slightly
floating tempo. Now I want to see the character(s) actually do the dance!

This is very cool BUT, most of the consonants are too loud and alot of the timing is bad. Wordbuilder delays the onset of the vowel, so you MUST tweak the timing of your midi sequence to make the vowels come in on the beat

Try using the overall speed settings to slow down things. The vowels are coming in too fast after the consonants. It sounds choppy that way. You have to get the right speed happening, then adjust your midi sequence so the vowels hit on the beat.

Why not post them under your link.
Also, did you submit the WB file to the database, we're trying to build this up?

Well, I mostly want the words to speak for themselves, as it were, but I'm not opposed to providing a link to the words for the sake of convinience. Point taken. :) I also didn't know if it was a violation of the rules. I've edited the original post.
I'll be submitting WB files soon enough. I need a break from Choirs right now. :)

This sounds great to me, but i really think it would be perfect if the non-pitched consonants were slightly softer. Thanks for posting.

You know, as I was finishing this up, I actually thought to myself, "I'll bet Nick will think the consonants are a bit too loud." :)
I appreciate the input and agree to a point, but overall I'm happy with the volume. It's actually intentional, and I think the subject is just a minor pedagogical difference between us. After the contest concludes and as I continue writing my tutorial, I'm going to be eager to experiment further on this subject. It was hard enough to stop playing with my entry and force myself to post it. I'm afraid that if I went back to further tweak it, I'd not get to post it in time, or I'd start messing with things I should leave alone. :)
But again, I appreciate your input, and I'll address it later on.

I think I'm purely focused on anything that might give away the choir as not real.

I've not listened to a huge amount of these entries, but I clicked the link and liked what I heard. Nothing fancy, just really atmospheric and kinda creepy.

Congratulations Mark!
I really want to thank you all for listening to my contest piece. Also, thanks to all at EWQL for creating the Choirs. They are truly amazing. I enjoyed everyone's submissions, and have been inspired to keep on learning with Choirs (I posted a work in progress in the regular demos section, and you can link to it here: http://www.soundsonline-forums.com/showthread.php?t=1324 ). I look forward to getting EWQLSO GOLD! (yipee!!!)
I found that the biggest challenge in getting realistic sounding text from the choirs was not so much in tweaking phonemes in wordbuilder (I hardly tweaked any). Rather, the biggest challenge is tweaking the timing of the midistream, by inserting short rests judiciously in the score. And, then, of course, there is the challenege of writing idiomatically for choir. In the work in progress link above, I actually did not edit a single thing in Wordbuilder--I just carefully selected which phonemes to use (it still may need a little tweaking). Wordbuilder is awesome!!!
Thanks again!
