Default Where can I buy scores?

Simple question really...
Bruno Di Giorgi (I think on these forums) posted a link to a thing he'd done - a remake of the opening theme for Braveheart, using EWQL libraries... this is it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi4Hy...D_6IYDwhcNMweZ

I can't seem to find anywhere to buy this score from - I suspect Bruno did it all by ear (because he is a ******* ) but I'm not that clever.

Since my own compositional skills aren't all that great, I figured a good way of learning how to make the libraries sound ALIVE is to try to recreate some film scores or something, and then asking you fine people for feedback until it doesn't sound like I just programmed notes in one at a time to a sequencer and played them back on a Bontempi keyboard from the mid 80s

I have found some other scores, including some nice John Williams ones... but I really like what Bruno does here with the Uillean pipes... and I can't thank him enough for posting the video showing the CC channels too.

I guess I'd just need composer's part, but where is the best place(s) to get a hold of these sorts of scores ?
Esp this Braveheart one - I love the soundtrack to that movie... but I could only find things arranged for Junior Concert Band ... or something silly.

Thanks.

J.

Save for the John Williams sig series available from Hal Leonard, there are virtually no film and tv scores available. There's one here and there, but it's not like you can just pick a piece you like, and go find it somewhere - because you cant. They just have not been made available to the public.

Cheers.

Indeed, and to make things worse, many classic scores were thrown out by studios as they were 'cleaning up'.

Hal Leonard is still a good source though, in addition to the wonderful John Williams Signature Series (warmly recommended) they have other scores from various other composers.

www.sheetmusicplus.com is a good online store, and for out of copyright scores there is the Petrucci music library obviously (http://imslp.org/).

If you are specifically interested in film scores, Scott Smalley's course will give you access to original (hand written) scores by Denny Elfman, Basil Poledouris, Jerry Goldsmith, etc.

Some of Bernard Hermann's scores were preserved but aren't publicly available.

The USC has a fine collection of film scores which however can only seen accessed physically locally.

I know there are efforts to restore the classic Hollywood scores (to the extent still available) but I am not sure exactly what the status of that is.

I'm now checking the sample lesson by Steven Scott Smalley. It looks quite interesting.

What's most interesting, though, is his portfolio. I'm checking him on IMDB, and indeed, he's being credited as an (additional?) orchestrator for Batman 1989 and Judge Dredd.

I just recently stumbled upon Smalley's page. The book does look really interesting and I'm sure eventually I'll buy it

I also have some of the JW signature scores (ordered from Sheetmusicplus) and they are great in every way, highly recommended.

And of course, if you know where to look, there are some facsimiles of original scores floating around...

First of all, thank you Oldfield, for linking that video I made some time ago!
I am an avid collector of film score too, and have to agree to what others said. JW scores and SSS course seem to be the only source of that material.

But here's some news for you, I took the first measures and the middle (strings) part of Braveheart's Main Title track from this book: "On the track: a guide to contemporary film scoring" that is also a brillant book, actually one of my favourites.
In that book you'll find a lot of scores, though most of them are reductions.

John Williams scores are only available from dealers not HL directly. Here's our listing:

I found some good practice with the libraries by working on some quite fiddly orchestrated "classical" pieces like spinets From Rite of Spring or Orion or even Beethoven 5. Plus the scores are more readily available just on Amazon or through google (I know its not the same as working on the film scores though)

P.s. I think everybody interested in "visual music" should have a listen to Orion by Kaija Saariaho you wont hear a piece paint crystal white of jet black better than that piece.
