There is still a premium on Thunderbolt products and, ultimately, it is really more ideally suited for video. If you are getting a new mobo then it likely will already have SATA III so you could use that for SSDs. I have it only because internal expansion and use of Sata 3 really is not a practical option (it can be done, it is just very difficult).

while it is true that video benefits most of the extreme data transfers we haven't really seen any audio hardware with thunderbolt yet. UA Apollo won't ship their thunderbolt card until this summer and for what I know they are first to have it " built-in" (apogee has a external thunderbolt box for the symphony I/o). The Apollo will be able to load a lot more plugins on its dsp chip when it is thunderbolt compared to firewire800

I saw a prototype of avid 's hd i/o on YouTube with thuderbolt, carrying hd video and a fullblown protools session on a single cable. That's crazy

I just wish 10Gbps Ethernet would get cheaper, and a lot less bulky. Then we could have ATA over Ethernet (AoE) devices that would fly, but not just for one computer.

With 10GbE, we could have real shared SAN devices, with 1GB/s transfer speeds!!!

However, I believe Win8 Pro will have native link bonding, so connecting computers to a LACP compatible device with multiple 1GbE connections will be possible to increase transfer speeds.
