Hans Zimmer said himself in a recent interview that he's tired of hearing everyone trying to sound like him. Every composer has influences that inevitably help sculpt their craft, but one should not be afraid to go outside their musical "comfort zone" and experiment. It's the unique composers that end up at the top of the heap. John Williams, Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone are perfect examples....you can instantly tell its them because they have developed their own signature sound.
This is just my opinion, and I'm guilty of myself of trying sound like other composers. However, I feel you can go a lot farther by purposely finding your own sound. |

Are we trying to compose themes like HS or are we just using his samples? You can give new soul to a same sample with your own style. The most important thing here is using the samples that are used in a big film. If I try to create a piece like HSs or try to create similar percussions like him, if I try use these samples in that way then you are ok. If today HS explains that he is used Hollywood Brass in Batman, will we stop using it to avoid sounding like him? he uses brass samples generally with one or two notes, you may use in much different ways.

From Urs- As you know, next week premieres the final part of The Dark Knight trilogy. For the soundtrack HZ used a custom built Zebra with Diva filters and some prototype features originally planned for Zebra3. He got us to do this in return for some rights. Now the gist is, part of what we’re releasing requires that pimped version of Zebra, hence it will be bundled. It isn’t perfect, e.g. the “Diva” filters are mono, there’s no multicore support, significant CPU drain if the extras are used. We call it ZebraHZ, and it will run nicely as a *separate* plugin! So, hehe, I can’t hold back anymore, and it has been guessed rightly a few times – all Zebra patches by HZ/HS designed for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, accompanied by ZebraHZ. Sells for 99$, requires an existing Zebra license. http://www.synthtopia.com/content/20...-knight-synth/ And from the website itself: A bank of over 400 presets, a collaboration between Hans Zimmer and Howard Scarr. Practically all Zebra sounds in the The Dark Knight as well as The Dark Knight Rises soundtracks are included, plus several more that didn’t quite fit into the scores. The pack also includes Hans' custom built update from a licensed Zebra2.x to the version you can see in this video, ZebraHZ. Many of the more recent patches make use of the extra features available in ZebraHZ. Last edited by MikeH; 07-31-2012 at 09:34 AM. |

On another HZ topic:
Does anyone have any info about the "Sinatra" biopic he is supposed to score in the near future? I'm a big Sinatra fan, so I'm really interested to find out when it's supposed to happen. Jason Watts |

IMDB lists it as a Martin Scorsese film but really no other details. Wide range of people mentioned as choices for SInatra - Al Pacino, an unknown, DiCaprio; Robert DeNiro mentioned for Dean Martin.

Wow! Bob "You talkin' to me?" Deniro as Dean Martin? Interesting. I'm a Big Band era nut, so this is all very appealing to me!
