I'm looking for good segments in movies to write my own music to for practice, does anybody know where I can find some to download or some good clips from DVDs.
I know of various free clips on some archive sites, as well as the videos from the contests here, but I'm looking to get my hands on clips from more recent movies (as in the past 5-10 years to now). Furthermore, it would be great if anybody who does this knows of any movies that have separate audio tracks. Most movies have just the one mixed audio track, so it's sound effects, voice, and music. Rarely, movies will have multiple tracks, so you can choose to only delete the music which would be great. Thanks.

I've posted this before, it is buried in the archives of the forum somewhere
Go through your DVD collection, find deleted scenes, often these won't have music on them because they were cut before the composer wrote the score.

I didn't think they would be suitable for practice due to that.

The lengths vary, but when you score a film you will be scoring scenes as much as you are scoring a whole movie so short cues are also good practise. Just looking quickly at some of the deleted scenes on my DVD's I see time ranges from 30 seconds to 5 minutes - so a good variety to practise scoring.
You can also look on YouTube for more deleted scenes.

There is a 1975 film called Dog Day Afternoon staring Al Pacino that I'm pretty sure has no soundtrack. You could score the entire film if you like.

Southland too. Lots of emotional scenes and car chases.

After doing some research, apparently all DVDs/ Blu-rays that have 5.1 surround sound can be edited to remove the music and keep the sound effects and dialogue if you extract the audio.

How do you do that?

Curious about this, too. I guess it's got something to do with the music being played only on two speakers in a 5.1 environment?
