The only way to get an idea of what is going on is to monitor actual ram usage. Try using Menumeters, its shows RAM, Core Usage, Disk Streaming etc.

The issue with memory overuse is a 'feature' if you will particularly of Lion. While Apple claimed there was no problem, many thought otherwise. At the press release for Mountain Lion, improved memory management was listed on one of the slides. The postings I have seen online do suggest that Mountain Lion is much better in this regard than Lion, about the same as Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard actually has the problem as well but nowhere near as bad as Lion.

I don't think this is the real/main issue. Kontakt has always had better data streaming and memory management than Play, even on earlier 32bit versions of OSX. Play was young then, but time has passed and things never really improved in that department.

Hopefully Play 4 addresses this problem.

Other than PLAY I haven't seen major memory handling issues over 10.6, 7, 8. There may be slight differences in memory management between them, but nothing big enough to be noticeable.

I sure hope the context menu click command is put back in this release, as Joey Medina told me that it was taken out by accident in Play 3.
