Hi,
The prices of SSDs is now starting to get acceptable, and I thought I should start to replace some of my harddrives with SSDs, starting with the OS drive. However, I have started to hesitate a little due to claims that SSDs is still very unstable compared to the mechanical harddrives. I have a very stable system today that I'm happy with. I would like to take advantage of the SSD technology, but not if that would jeopardize the stability of my current system. At the moment I am looking at getting this one: http://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-2-5-In...537789&sr=1-23 Is there any SSD users here that would like to comment on the stability of today's SSDs?

There's really no advantage to having the OS on a SSD, unless you can't wait the extra 20 seconds when you boot up. I noticed you have Hollywood Strings....is it Gold? I have HS Gold on a separtae SSD that I bought just for that library and it makeas a world of difference. I put it all on a 64GB Sata III Kingston SSD, costing only $79. So far I haven't had a single issue.

what do you mean by stability? yes SSDs are prone to failure just like mechanical drives. is that what you are referring to?

SSDs are more stable than HDDs in general, due to a lack of moving parts. That said, the universal rule of cheap things being cheap still applies.

I definitely recommend having the OS on an SSD. Everything works so smoothly and quietly.

Unrelated to the thread (sorry), but does HS Gold fit all on a 64GB SSD? The specs recommend 310GB of free space but I'm wondering how much space Gold & Diamond actually take up in reality.

I've also been researching SSD's a lot recently and for reliability, apparently Plextor (M3 pro or the soon to be released M5 pro) are extremely reliable and come with 5 year warranties. They do seem to be slightly more expensive than the competition though. I personally would go for the OCZ Vertex 4 with the recent 1.5 firmware, it seems to be the fastest since the latest 1.5 firmware version all round and has dropped in price quite significantly in the past few months and also has a 5 year warranty.
For streaming purposes, I can't imagine SSD's dying very quickly. |

I believe HS Gold is only around 48GB. Platinum and Diamond are much larger.
