Default Exclusive license vs non-exclusive license

I was always under the impression that non-exclusive license is used more often than an exclusive. But for what exactly? Can you veterans here give me an idea on when you might choose to use an exclusive license for? What about making custom music for a webpage or promotional video? Is custom music more often dealing with an exclusive license?

Video games often involve an exclusive license, yes?

There are many books out there about music+business, but I often come across those along the lines of "how your band can make it in the business" which deals specifically to bands and not so much composers or those making custom music. Are there any books that might help?

Music, Money and Success by Jeff and Todd Brabec is excellent; as is All You Need To Know about the Music Business by Donald Passman.
