It is still a product. They include it with their other products but it is still a product, particularly since they require its use. There are companies for whom samples are the only product. Digital Sound Factory is one such company. You can get their sound sets in Kontakt, SoundFont, SFZ (Cakewalk's format for Dimension and SFZ+), Refill, and Structure. Their product is just the sample sets, you get them in various formats, and indeed could convert them (SFZ is just a text description plus wave/flac files, and SoundFont is freely editable). The sample players are products from other companies.

EW used to work like that, but decided to become a software company as well. Their products aren't only samples now, but sample players as well (also some other software, like reverb). They are not doing everyone some tremendous favour by releasing a sample player, it is part of their products, a required part.

My point was that you seemed to be concerned about the money they would be losing if they released a buggy software, and that releasing an open beta is not the same as actually RELEASING the software. Becuase Play is not a product, it is a free sample player that you USE with their products.

Maybe we are misunderstanding each other?
Just how is that different from what they are doing now?

No-one (in their right mind) wants to release a product which they know has bugs, so I would expect anyone NOT to offer a public beta UNTIL their own testing showed no bugs. No point in that! 'admin' has stated they ARE finishing off their own testing and closed external testing before making the public beta available.

True testers are skilled and methodical people who like to find out if they can break the tested stuff, but also meticulously document where in the sequence of steps of the test script failures occurred.

Most users do NOT have those skills, but are usually too vague and sloppy in their descriptions to be of much help. That is probably why MS since W7 has opted to not get public comments about problems with pre-RTM previews, but instead jig them for gathering telemetry when let loose.

Between the DP and CP of Win8, MS made 100,000 changes. I doubt they would have been able to identify that many things to change purely on public feedback. Telemetry tells a lot more than just about problems, but also tells them how easily users managed to do things even if nothing failed. It is that level of detail that enables making usability improvements that most users would never even think about.

Now when EW puts out their Play beta, let's hope they include telemetry gathering so that they can make the release version really smooth.

Default yawn

would someone please tell me how to turn email notifications off? This debate, arguing, point-counterpoint, whatever you want to call it has really gotten tiresome. Cheers.

Then we have just been misunderstanding each other. I agree with everything you say in this post, so no point in contuining to argue.

The open beta starts soon so my guess is that it is at least a month away. But I don't know of course. This is just speculation.

I prefer to wait more time and have a powerful & tested product than have soon a not stable one :-) I believe the EWQL staff will do a good job about it! :-)
