Has anyone noticed some odd anomalies to the "Bowed Bowl Timp" hits in StormDrum2? The sample seems to cut in abruptly at spots and I hear some noise as well.

In real life, these are very quiet sounds, as well as gongs played with a superall. So this is why the recordings could have some room noises.
I will check these sounds once I get home. - Piotr |

Ok, I listened to these sounds, and I agree, that these are pretty noisy.
But as far as I know, these were done using a timpani, and a bowl (tibetan bowls, probably different size), placed on the head of timpani, which was bowed with a cello bow, while changing a pitch (timpani head tension) with a foot pedal. (sounds complicated, but it's really simple) This kind of sounds were used for example in opening cue for "Memoirs of Geisha" by John Williams. Unfortunately, as sounds coming from the bowl (and the head of the timpani) may be really quiet and subtle, the mechanism of timpani and the foot pedal, which with the pitch is changed - may not be totally silent (and is not - in most cases). As for the abrupt cut tails, I think this is how the samples were recorded, so nothing we can do (except, that we can lower the release time, to make the sample end earlier, but smoothly) - Piotr |
