Default How to setup Soundflower/Logic8/PLAY standalone

Hello comrades,

Ever since switching to PLAY standalone mode I have been having tremendous success. However now my audio routing is all screwed up. I've been futzing around with Soundflower (16ch) for a while now and can't seem to get anywhere.

I'm running Logic 8 and my interface is MOTU 896. I have 2 PLAY standalone apps, 1 running QL Pianos and the other is running SD2.

Anyone know what I should set my routings to in each app?

ok got it working not in my normal template but in a complete stripped down file with one track using a simple patch.
It will occasionally drop out at which point I change my sample rate to 44.1 within logic then back to 48k (everything is set to 48k) and then it starts working (audible) again.

What a joke.

Can we please go back to a world where things worked! I am REALLY hoping that the next version of PLAY will run a lot smoother in PLUG-IN mode in Logic because this Standalone mode is killing my workflow and productivity.

First off, what's you computer specs? That is a big determining factor in the reliability of using soundflower to route audio back to logic. I have a G5 dual 2.0 and it is not fast enough to run soundflower smoothly with Logic 8, meaning that there will always be at least one click or pop no matter how simple the track. I have resorted to using the standalone to compose only and then loading the PLAY plug-in in logic and freezing the track when either the standalone starts to bog down or I am ready to mix. Yes, this is a pain but it's the price you pay for using an old system with new tech.

If you do have a newer machine, search the forums as this subject has been talked about a ton and it is working for some people. To be honest I have more luck with JackOS than soundflower so try that. Still clicks and pops but not as much as soundflower and bit easier to set-up.

Mac pro 8 core 3.2ghz 10 gigs RAM

PLAY is unstable (clicks pops, strange intermittent problems) as a plugin in Logic 8 for me but in standalone it shines beautifully.
Everything is up to date. Its a finely tuned system and the problems I experienced with soundflower were really indicative of some incompatibilities between 3 different audio related software products all trying to send audio out yet another hardware device.

It seems wrong to me to even attempt such cross communication between apps but it is the ONLY option as long as there are continued limitations and issues with RAM allocation and plugin integrity.

Are other Mac Pro 8 core w/ LP8 users having similar problems when running the latest version of PLAY as a plug-in in LP8 ?

I can speak on behalf of 1 other composer whom I work very closely with. His mac pro is a slightly slower clock speed and he has had devastating problems when using SD2 as a plug in but total stability in standalone.

Hey Slugger,

Have you seen this thread by Rimskykorsakov? http://www.soundsonline-forums.com/s...&highlight=IAC

That doesn't sound very encouraging.

Are there any Mac Pro 8 core w/ LP8 users, that are very satisfied with latest version of PLAY's performance as a plug-in ?

Yes, thanks Jay, it took me awhile but the IAC MIDI setup of using standalone is no longer a problem for me. That end of things is working fine. It's now just an issue of audio routing which Soundflower seemed to be an option but it does 'funny' unpredictable things and while working on a project I can't have that.

Interestingly enough, because I am always opening and closing files there has been an unexpected benefit from standalone mode. I do not have to wait for QL pianos to reload it's bosi 88 full patch every time I reopen a L8 file.

checks and balances, checks and balances.

im using logic 8, on mac pro 8 cores 2.8ghz, with abt 10gb ram too. the cpu is kinda touchy in some cases but relatively stable, sometimes when im just playing around, only one core will be used. only after i record the midi performance and add another instrment track, will it spread across the other cores, but its ttaking up alot of cpu power, not somethiing i'll expect. we'll see how logic and snow leopard goes in time maybe? the kontakt engine uses MUCH MUCH less cpu processing power than play, but sounds worse (quite a substantial amount)!

either way, i can use pLAY as plugins woth absolutely no problem (ive got MOR,gypsy,vOp, symphonic orchestr plat, goliath)
