Hey guys,
I often hear that Nuendo 4 is the best DAW for post production. Just wondering what features does Nuendo 4 have that logic 8 and DP 6 don't? |

Think that MIDI element is more elegant than in Logic 8. Logic 8 'sounds' better for music IMHO. Nuendo is great for hitting frames on the head so probably better from an ADR, Foley, Sound design perspective. Logic is easy to use, intuitive etc. I have both.

So just so I understand you compose in logic and switch to nuendo to mix and add effects?

So I could just score my movies in DP 6 and transfer all my files over to nuendo to do the surround mix and add effects and plug-ins like altiverb etc? And would Nuendo be best on a Pc system? |

I'm actually sort of saying the opposite. Sonically, I prefer the sound of Logic 8 for music - something about the engine sounds better IMHO. Which is a massive shame, because as I said, I think Steinberg have a much more in depth - elegant - approach to programming MIDI than Logic which is much more user friendly and thus less detailed. I know for example that Harry Gregson Williams and Hans Zimmer both program their midi using various iterations of Cubase triggering their libraries on external slave machines which output to pro-tools rigs for printing and mixing. This way, they benefit from Cubase's MIDI programming, lots of horsepower for their libraries and the DSP mixing and plug-ins of pro-tools. They can have their cake and eat it, as one would expect.
For me, I'll track lay any foley, spot effects, sound design etc in Nuendo, bounce them as stems (i.e. a foley stem, a spot fx stem) to be mixed in Soundtrack Pro (which gets bundled with Logic Studio and integrates seamlessly with Final Cut). I keep any serious recording (so ADR or music recording - vox, acoustic guitars etc) in Logic. Plus I have Nuendo on PC and Logic obviously is on the mac which is where I have my UAD cards installed, so I can access better DSP plug-ins on the mac than the PC. |

Worth mentioning that Logic 8 also has Eucon and, frankly, I've not found anything from a surround perspective in Nuendo that I've subsequently found lacking in Logic or Soundtrack Pro...

The difference is, with Logic it comes free. If you want to use it with Nuendo it will cost you $2500. Nuendo 4 is an unfortunate mess at the moment. Pretty much everyone I know who was using nuendo 4 has moved back to Nuendo 3 for stability. Even with the new automation and routing, Nuendo 4's headaches aren't worth it. There isn't a whole lot in terms of "proper" Post Production in Nuendo either. One of the biggest issues is video. The amount of video issues make it impossible to get rolling. LEX
