Default Surround sound questions?

Hello everyone
I'm interested in moving into surround sound recording. Right now I have a pair of KRK's and I'm thinking of expanding to a pair of Adam A7's. I'm also using a Mackie Big Knob. So the signal comes from my audio card to the Monitor switch (Mackie Big Knob) then to the speakers. So this only happens as a Right and a Left signal. Here is my question. Do I need some type of surround sound controller? My DAW understands front to rear audio but how do I make the speakers understand this? Is it just a wiring issue? For example, two sets of speakers hooked up to my Mackie Big knob (source selector) and thats it. Or do I need more components to make this happen. If someone can lead me to a answer on this I would be grateful.
