I don't know if this has been discussed here before. I couldn't find anything on a search.
Has anyone experienced a major difference in volume of the piano if the Open / Closed slider is not moved after opening an instance of a piano. If the slider is not moved the volume level is only about half of expected. As soon as it is moved it responds at the proper level. I have not tested with all the piano but the Bosendorfer and Steinway both have done it to me. I never used the Bosendorfer after a couple of attempts as it didn't sound very bright. I then moved the slider and WOW there was a real piano there. I double checked to make sure there were no controllers that I had inadvertently activated. The strange thing is that once it is moved you don't have to move it again on subsequent reopening of the project. I am using Sonar 8.5.3 64bit on an XP Pro 64 with an Edirol FA-101. |

I havenīt experienced the effect by moving the lid slider but I have experienced that the Bosendorfer sample normally is very dark sounding but sometimes when I load it it is much brighter. But it is very random and most of the times it is the dark version.

I just made as discovery last night that I can't figure out why it works, but it just does. If I insert a RPN 0 in the controller lanes and set it to the bottom(off) I get no sound; all the way to the top I get a proper bright sounding piano. If I move the open/closed slider while playing with the RPN 0 set to the bottom it will start to play properly until I restart and it goes through the RPN again. The change in RPN does not produce a visual change on the open/closed slider on the GUI (it doesn't move with any of the changes to RPN) but the effect is the same as if I moved the slider during play.
I could not find anything in the Piano PDF dealing with RPN 0 values. Any ideas, or if it is covered somewhere in the manual/help files where it is. There may be a bunch more goodies I am missing. |

probably a stupid question but what is RPN?

I now moved the open/close slider before I loaded the Bosendorfer patch and now the bright sounding piano is there! Strange

It is one of the controllers (CC). It is normally used for patch changes. Why it has a bearing on the volume I do not know.

Finally solved the problem. In Sonar Cakewalk Plug-in Manager - Plug-in Properties there is a box to check that says Do Not Intercept NRPN's. When is checked the odd behaviour does not occur. This may be more important for people using midi files that are downloaded or purchased that were done on a different keyboard sequencer with sysx data being transmitted.
