I understand they were both recorded at different locations, one in an Orchestral Hall and another in a Movie Scoring Studio, but for strings at least is HS better?

I don't come on here much so, I understand its more of an ignorant question to frequent posters. But oblige me if you will.

No, it is not obsolete.

It's certainly showing it's age, but no, I wouldn't say it's obsolete. There's still a lot of good sounds in there.

HS is only strings, EWQL SO is a whole orchestra

At this point I'd say at least the strings are pretty obsolete.

It depends on what you mean by obsolete, there is no way I can afford HS nor do I have any need for such a fancy library and I don't think my computer could handle it. So for me SO is the best thing.

So is hardly obsolete... neither are the strings that are found in it.
Due to not being able to afford HS, and also needing more than JUST 1 really big fancy string library, I got SO gold. I've been getting GREAT results out of it, that are STILL IMHO better than many other libraries out there. The strings aren't HS good, but they're still very good, especially if you put in the time to really tweak them until you get the best possible performance out of them. |

I got HS and there are certain things that SO simply does better. And there don't appear to be any clusters or weird aleatoric articulations in HS which is a rather significant hole. The stuff HS does well, it does better than any other library on the planet, but it's still one tool in an arsenal of tools. SO is still, in some ways, more satisfying. HS requires a fair bit of work to get to sound real and there are still points - velocities and registers etc - where it can sound synthy. What's cool is that if you have SO too, you're covered.
