Default Recorders in the Courtyard

Just some background music for the castle courtyard in the game my friend is making. It's not quite done, but I'm not quite sure what else to do with it. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

hey mike

bass seems a bit loud in the first part. see if it can play a more interesting line and add realism.

here's a great opportunity to experiment with adding a bunch of subtle layers to create a unique sound. you might start with some higher winds.

Thanks for the response!

The base is kind of just sketched in right now for lack any better ideas of what to do with it. I know I want the cello in there, it's just how to get it to sound the very best that's causing some problems right now. I probably should get some sleep before worrying about it more.

As for the higher winds, it might be interesting to add an oboe. However, I have to be careful with flutes and similar instruments, because I don't want it to sound too... orchestral. I'm trying to keep this one sounding a little more like a close up, personal, renaissance style performance.

I figured you might. I'm thinking more of say a high flute layered in playing some long notes for subtle ambience, almost like you can't even tell it's there-- rather than an oboe or flute playing a distinct melody as part of the ensemble. Just something to experiment with.

Hmm... I quite like this idea. Perhaps, give it the feel of really being in some big courtyard hearing listening to one performance, just being able to hear a few soft notes of another performance. Going to be interesting to play around with.

Hi Michael,

You have an interesting motif that has potential.

I'm looking forward for the complete orchestration of this piece.

You could add some scottish bagpipe as invited player with the recorder in this piece and make it sound celtic.

Fred.

How I only wish I had a bagpipe to do so. Guess I need to look into getting some ethnic instruments...

Michael

I am a bit confused.

The reverb depicts a very large space and yet you say

I'm trying to keep this one sounding a little more like a close up, personal, renaissance style performance

I think it might help if the recorders were panned more towards the left and brought forward in the mix. Also a few more legato notes in the recorder would help. Each of the recorders would also benefit with some more cc work.

It is a nice start, but it could be better with some more work.

Ron,

I probably should have mentioned that I haven't done anything but slap some basic reverb on it right now. I like to have the composition either finished, or near finished before really spending some time making sure that the reverb and everything sounds right.

As for the recorders, they're a user made freebee that I picked up over on the garritan forum. I'll do what I can with them, but my options are somewhat limited. How I wish I had a good mic so I could just do the recorder parts my self... *sighs*

Do you know about the "Renaissance Flutes" sample lib from Sampletekk, or Westgate's "Rare Winds"?
