In my case the cpu died,and by then they were out of production so i couldnt find it anywhere.i ended up buying both a new motherboard and cpu.I didnt run into any problems before i replaced my dvd player/burner several months after that again,then i called microsoft support and was given a new activation number.
It probably depends on what licence you got if it works or not.
If in doubt i would call microsoft support.
