I didn't think this was necessary considering the instruments were recorded in their proper orchestral seating arrangements.

And the right placement is "pan" in the middle ?

Yes. It's just one of the many cool things about the EW libraries, the panning is correctly built in. You can, however, fool with the placement (bringing solos forward for example) by adjusting equalization and reverb.

Are you sure it's ok in SILVER ?

Oh yes.
In fact the panning in silver is exactly the same as with Gold (minus the reverb trails) and the Platinum 'F' mic position. |

dude, if you don't like the placement oif the instruments you can always experiment with the panning, but the instruments in silver are correctly panned. (however both vln ensembles are in the same stage position, so if you're using them as 1st's and 2nd's you should pan one or both a little bit the adjust.

Whenever I give files to a "real" engineer to mix these days, I always go to great lengths to explain to them about the panning in EWQLSO. Too many times, I've worked with perfectly intelligent engineers who first-thing grab the pan pots and swing all the violin files to the left and all the cello files to the right thinking to themselves, "I'll simulate the seating of an orchestra with my handy pan knobs". Of course, the stereo image is destroyed and sounds like doo-doo.
I tell them that if they do want to make SUBTLE changes to the panning, to split the files into mono left/right files. Pan them hard all the way, and then achieve panning with the faders - not the pans. If you want to pan an instrument slightly to the left, just reduce the right fader. This way you keep the stereo image pretty much intact (by comparison) and you effectively move the instrument to where you want it. The usual response: Hmm, interesting!! |
