Default midi cc11 in cubase

I load play into the vst instruments, create a midi track, record 4 bars of string chords. Now i open the key editor and change the volume button to midi cc11 expression. I can draw in the expression and playback.

Is there a way to instead of pencil it in use one of my midi keyboard knobs or sliders to "draw in" midi cc11?

Yes it should be automatic in Cubase. Nothing to do with Play. Check the Cubae manual

I didn't think it had anything to do with play, I just have no idea how to set up a specific knob or slider for the task.

Those settings are on your controller. Most keyboard have a slider that you can assign to any CC#.

Look at the manual for your keyboard controller.

So I choose MIDI cc 11 on my controller and it will know to draw expression in the MIDI editor and automation tracks as long as I select expression?

I have spent hours trying to figure this out with no progress. I think it has something to do with m-audio's hypercontrol setting but I haven't been right yet so who knows. I'm starting to wonder if I should just draw it in myself using the pencil tool and forget this frustration.

There will be instructions in your controller keyboard's manual as to how to control any cc to any knob or slider. Exactly what model controller keyboard do you have, an Axiom or something? If so you need to go into edit mode to do it. It's all in the pro user guide :
http://www.m-audio.com/images/global...ro_UG_EN01.pdf , page 24 onwards.

Thank you for your help guys I appreciate it. It seems that M-audio has not released a proper "hypercontrol" version for 64 bit Cubase only a beta version on the forums. Once I turned off hypercontrol and used it as a generic midi controller things got much better. Thank you for the help once again.
