+1. IMO, the new material for Bane is much more interesting and frightening than the Joker's stuff.

Sorry for bringing up 2010, but I havent seen much since then...

I really liked the score for How to Train your Dragon. One of the more involed musical scores in my opinion. Sounded fun to write.

Megamind was pretty good. A couple themes in there I enjoyed, as well as the "black Mumba " song

Despicable Me was another cool score with a very distinct feel.

Sorry, I'll post my 2012 reviews in 2014 when those movies hit HBO On Demand

I must agree on How to Train your Dragon. That's gotta be one of my all-time favorite soundtracks. Not only am I a fan of Celtic music, but Powell's creativity with constantly using lots of different ethnic instruments (rather than leaning heavily on the orchestra) was inspiring, and I found that the music stands on its own two feet, even apart from the movie. And of course, anyone that can successfully use Celtic music to score a film about Vikings deserves some props.

I'm looking forward to hearing what he'll do for the sequel...more so than the movie itself, actually. Too bad that won't be until summer of 2014.

Big fan of HTTYD's score. its amazing !

Back to topic, Brave, TDKR, Spiderman' s soundtracks are great.

Haven't watched some recent movies yet, but i really hated Battleship's soundtrack, or in other words the "borrowed from transformers music" . I wish i could mute it and watch the movie instead of thinking the whole time about the minor changes he made to kinda change it from Transformers score.

The Bourne Legacy scored by James Newton Howard.

A continuation of the Great Bourne action music style

Check it out.

Cheers,

Today I had a quick first listen of the new James Bond soundtrack by Thomas Newman.
I didn't really hear anything special, but maybe it works great for the film. Lot's of electronic / rhythm music.

I hope to see the film next week.

Aside from The Hobbit, do we have any scores to look forward to this year?

Disappointed to read this opinion... Everything Newman does is special. And on a Bond film? Even more so!
And I greatly admire the fact he has scored a movie with such a clear sense of identity and managed to keep his.

It is only my first opinion, that I don't really like listening to this score on it's own (without the movie). I actually feel the same for a lot of Newman's scores. BUT, it might work great with the movie. Based on his previous work, it probably does.

Ow and by the way, the electronic/rhytm thing was just a description of the score. I didn't mean to make it sound like it's a bad thing.

Neil Davidge's score for Halo 4 turned out to be pretty impressive, I thought...and while it's for a video game, it does still count as a soundtrack. I think series purists may be disappointed with how different it is compared to Martin O'Donnell's take on the Halo Universe, but I like how it advances the musical themes and feeling of the story...there's even a bit of romance in the score.

I thought his quieter moments were the most impressive (in tracks like Haven and Green and Blue). His combination of other-worldly synths and digital sounds, combined with his unique approach to the orchestra, paint a really intriguing and refreshing picture. Overall I think his score breathes new life into the Halo series, and the franchise will benefit as a result.

Re: Prometheus
I listened to the previews on iTunes and I don't think it's so bad. Seems somewhat thematic, has some cool programming. Sure there's lots of droney tense music in there, but there's some good stuff as well.

I'm a huge fan of the Williams and Goldsmiths of the world, but people like Reznor have the same right to compose film music as anybody. Nothing says a score has to be orchestral or even live instruments for that matter. I don't know how you can say they don't have any skill unless you don't understand or respect what goes into a score like that or are just resentful that someone who didn't study music the old fashioned way is having success in the field you have worked hard to break into.
Seen a lot of the 'elitists' or snobs up their own asses around, as you describe as the resentful kind and you know, you are right that they try to belittle those of us without any academic music education. There are many great scores they are too quick to dub as 'boring' and funnily enough it's those people that hate on Hans Zimmer or Zimmer style scores when some of those scores are really cool.

Of course, if I see a movie I like to actually enjoy the movie (assuming it's good) without being the kind of twat that sits and tries to analyze the music on their first viewing/experience to feel all important about themselves ;D
