Hi guys,
Since I discovered that my processor is below requirements to run Cubase on it, I am getting ready to switch to a new one. Do you guys think that an AMD OPTERON 175 Dual Core 2.2.Ghz will do? (I can get this one used for a few bucks) Or would I need to get something way above that? Also, some of you may remember that to try and overcome the continuous crackles and pops I switched back to Cubase LE - but they still continue even when using Bosendorfers smallest patch. Any clues as to what could be wrong with my PC? LE's requirements are very low.... I have 3 Gbs of RAM.... Have no clue.... I even tried removing the DFD and it seemed better.... but still not 100% pure sound.... Any suggestions welcome! Christian PS - If I were to connect several PCs to use each one's potential, how are they actually connected to each other? Know if EWQL provides some sort of graph or something on how to do it? Thanks!

Hi Christian, I´m no way the PC expert but I can tell you this, I suffered all that "snap, crackle & pop" syndrome and then I got a 3 Ghz Dual core machine, it now runs perfect !! It doesn´t matter how many tracks I have on the screen it just runs like a dream. If you are getting this machine for a very low price I only have one question, "what are you waitining for" ?? Chris

2,2 Ghz seems a little low atm... I'm not sure but 3rd generation of Cubase SX/SL/LE won'te run really well there.
About your clicks and pops... apart from memeroy DFD has to do a lot with things. If your hard disk is slow (bellow 7200 rpm) then this is probably the reason. A defragmentation of the hard disk could help... don't know what else to suggest really...

AMD chips run at slower clock rates than their Intel competitors. But they do some magical mumbo-jumbo to get more performance out of a given clock cycle. So a 2.2GHz AMD chip was more or less equivalent to a 3.2+GHz Intel chip.
But the Core 2 Duo seems to have changed that. These things are really awesome. If you can, I'd recommend getting one of these, ideally with the 4MB processor cache. That seems to offer quite a step up in performance. |

The Core 2 Duo is definitely a good processor. I'm not sure how the dual cores improve music software, but for other benchmarks, it is very fast. Also, I'm sure future versions of music software will take better advantage of multiple cores.

Thanks for the suggestions...
I'm just trying to think how complex it would be to set up a project studio running on 2 connected PCs, say 1 brand new all=powerful machine and the second one with a good AMD procesor... Problem is: Have any of you guys actually done that? How are the two computers actually connected to each other and how is the second (slave?) computer controlled by the master? In Italy we'd say... BOH! Thanks again! Christian |

I'm trying to do just that. I have been working on a PC I built using an Athlon 64 3000. I upgraded that to an x2 4200 earlier this year. Then my old laptop finally died, so I bought a nice Core 2 Duo one from HP.
The laptop is now my main computer, and I'm experimenting with using my Athlon box as a slave using FX Teleport. My initial tests are good, but I need to get an outboard sound interface for my laptop. I can't get very low latency with the built-in sound hardware (below about 10ms it's a little unpredictable). |

The Intel Core Duo's are definately out doing the AMD X2 and Opterons.
But, literally around the corner in the New Intel Quad cores and Quad AMD processors. The new AMD's are suppose to really rock and apparently are doing things that no other chip has been able to do yet. If you are desparate for a new system, pick up an X2 and then you can use it for a slave system down the line. These new Quad core single chips are going to smoke the fastest dual/dual cores that are out now. LEX

I'm sure you will be the first of us adding a Quad Core to the engine room. Could you please keep us posted re. your experiences? Thanks in advance. - Peer |
