I own Gold XP and plan on upgrading to PLAY. If I write a sequence at home using PLAY with Gold will I be able to go to a studio that has PLAY with Platinum installed and playback my sequence without problems using my iLok?
Thanks! |

I believe the license states that the owner can use the library, but can't rent or allow other to use it. LEX

You wouldn't be using Gold's sounds though. You'd be using Platinum's 24-bit samples. And, aside from that obvious license violation, I'd assume that Play doesn't work like that in general (loading up only a section of a library based on the license presented to it). If you both had Gold, and you wanted to use his copy in the studio for, say, mixing purposes, and you used your license, that would make sense. But you can't use a license from one product in order to use a "portion" of another product.

Unless the license agreement have changed, which I doubt. Based on what the license have been in the past, it basically says that only the owner of the license may use the product for their productions. This has been the they way it has always been, AFAIK. Even if your friend owns the more expensive version, it would be a license violation for him to use your Gold version. This is why studios cannot buy sample libraries and offer them to clients for use. So if you are into being legit, then read your license agreement again. There is no reason you can't bring your key and a drive with gold on it if you want to mix it at his place. EastWest, Sam, Jen, Doug and Nick have all been good to all of us over the years, and have been very fair in everything they do for us. (including a minimal PLAY upgrade cost and half off Platinum). Please support that, their future products and free support, please respect your license agreement. LEX

In the PLAY iLok FAQ it says the following: "iLok authorizations are portable, and hot-swappable between different computers. It enables you to carry all of your authorizations with you wherever you go using a single key" Last edited by Doug Rogers; 03-09-2007 at 06:43 AM. |

Yes, the whole point of the moveable iLok is that, you can use it other places. So if you own Platinum, and you install your key you are fine. What isn't is using someone elses. Basically, what can now be done is that studios could offer sample libraries without the legal probelms with "renting" library sounds. Now, if you own it, all they will require is that you bring your licenses and there you go. Bottom line is, unlike a lot of other companies, EW has shown and proven how much they do care about their customers and users. They listen and put it to use. A company to respect. And even the new libraries are less expensive then they once were, which is another bonus. Keeping you and everyone legit will only give them the ability to create libraries you cannot live without and a playing sampler that is the first in the 64bit world. You can't beat what EW has provided. I would PM Sam or email EW regarding your license questions. LEX

It seems to me that the ilok is protable, but the library is not, since i like having the library on my faster, internal drive. Before I mix at another studio I would bounce all virtual instruments as audio files anyway. I don't see a lot of real world uses of carrying my ilok to different studios, although I did do it once for a film mix in L.A.

You could just bring an external drive with Gold or even install it on their drives if they have the space (since they wouldn't be able to keep using it without your dongle anyway). Your license means you can use gold, regardless of which machine it's running on. To use platinum, you'd need the license for it.
