Yeah, that thread is very old. Admittedly, Jeremy, it's still valid to a certain
extent, but the amount of RAM and CPU power being saved is so negligible
that nowadays it's really only workflow dependent on what you want to use.

And I definitely agree with that last statement. Effects on their own channels
and not on each individual track. That can really overload your system fast!

---

And if you haven't seen it yet - I do like to spam it around everywhere,
here are some performance improvements tips for your computer:

- Turn off WIFI and BlueTooth
- Unplug your LAN cable (basically, get off the internet)
- Turn off all background programs such as security etc.
Depending on your security settings, these might actually
be scanning the samples prior to them loading / playing.
- Only open your DAW. Check how many programs are
automatically run upon startup.

NOTE: Please remember that the turned off security settings
should be re-enabled prior to connecting to the internet again!

- Bounce to Audio and use a .wav file instead of live playback. This
will result in less system resources being used, but the downside
is that it can't be edited anymore - You can export the MIDI in addition, of course.

p. 19: The Sample Cache feature allows you to determine how many
of the samples are loaded directly into RAM or are streamed from the drive.
Test out different levels to see what works best for you.
p. 56: The Sample Purge feature allows you to remove any not used
samples from the RAM.

Cheers.

Well thank you both for that helpful reinforcement. OK, I won't about it. Which offers a whole lot of freedom.

For example, LMW's suggestion to bounce to audio. I do that, but it's a bit clunky. Love instrument tracks' ability to just freeze with one click.

And those other optimization suggestions - great to read that I'm already doing what the pros suggest. In fact I went one further - my music computer is just never connected to the internet, so I could disable everything to do with networking. Makes some installations a bit more troublesome, but I like knowing that my music computer is an island.

Speaking of which, LMW, I see in your sig you're a Win 7 man too. I just never saw the need to change what's working.

Anyway, thanks again.

Good point on freezing. I've added it to the list.

Yeah, if your computer is off the internet, it's indeed a bit more of a hassle
to get everything installed (via flash drive), but it allows you a lot more
freedom in turning off any assorted security programs.

Windows 7 is very stable, imo. I've never had any issues with that rig.
It's unfortunately not going to be supported anymore, so for my upcoming
rig (will get it once DDR5 is out, lower DDR4 prices hopefully ), I guess
it'll have to be Windows 10.

My second rig is Windows 10; I'm not quite sure how much I dislike it for DAW work.
I guess I'll see that in a year. For regular Office work, it's preferable, imo.
